Addition-Elle lately is kinda ugly ? I went to the Metrotown AE Sport store because they were having their spring sale and I didn't buy ANYTHING ! I tried on a bunch of jeans etc. but not only were the styles boring but the waists were all way too big ! I would be willing to have the waist taken in on a NICE pair of pants but not on jeans with an ugly wash. They used to carry brands like Dex and Point Zero but now all they seem to have is MXM which seems to be kinda low quality and the styles are trying to hard to be trendy. I want jeans like Seven for all Mankind, True Religion, Citizens of Humanity etc made with high quality fabrics and beautiful washes not some yellow tinged poorly cut crap ! I've recently placed orders with both Baby Phat and Lane Bryant's Seven7 jeans so hopefully I will like them ! Lately I've been doing almost all my shopping online in U.S stores because I just can't find the kind of stuff I am looking for up here. And what is up with all the spaghetti strap tops ? Hello, I wear a G cup , I HAVE to wear a bra !!!! I laugh at the ones with "shelf-bras" in them ! I'd love to hear from anyone who has found some other clothing sources (locally or not) . Does anyone else have the problem of pants/jeans fitting them in the hips and then being a mile too big in the waist ? I have a 16 inch difference between hips and waist and it is driving me crazy ! Do you guys normally get your pants taken in at the waist by a tailor ? How do they turn out ? I'd also love to know if anyone has found any cool shops that have tops that fit a bit large ? I wear the XL and XXL at Old Navy and sometimes fit a size 16 top (if it is stretchy) so it doesn't necessarily have to be a "plus size" shop. Any ideas ? Ok, I'll stop ranting now Kathy

I wish I had an answer for you - I have pretty much the same problem you have with pants - I have a 13 inch difference between hip and waist. Addition-Elle and Pennington's clothes are so ugly they make me want to cry! I think the larger problem is that Canada is in many ways far behind the US when it comes to plus-size fashions. I don't know if it's the idea that Canadians aren't as big as Americans, or if it's some subtle prejudice on the part of fashion buyers/clothing manufacturers in Canada, but the lack of clothing choices in Canada was one of the main reasons I decided to go to Weight Watchers. I would highly recommend having your pants taken in by a tailor - whether they're high quality or not. I know it seems like a waste sometimes, but I think you might be happier that way.

Hey, I have to argue with you. Most of the clothing I wear is from Pennington's, and I constantly get compliments on my fashion sense. They are not ugly, though they may not suit your style. And now that Pennington's introduced their MXM lines (which I don't wear, as I'm in my 40's), there are styles for everyone there. As a working woman, I'm very glad that Cotton Ginny isn't the only store to shop at!!!

Hey I totally agree! The other strange thing is that if you're slim int he waist and have a monster set of hips, that's considered plus size. Kind of odd.
Anyway it's a real pain to find pants that fit my waist. IF I find them big enough to fit my hips, they're too big in the waist, and if they by some miracle fit the waist, they never fit the hips, and even when I find pants that fit both (once every 3 years) then they're way way way way way too long. I find I get nothing but nasty comments from people in most stores (except Dynamite, which is surprisingly Big Ass Heaven often) so I'm sick of giving them my money. I'm so sorry! I'm not built like a ten year old boy!!!
I heard about this shop in the Metro so I'm heading over to spend some money! Whee!

I'm glad to report that I visited the two Addition-Elle stores at Metrotown this month, and although I didn't buy anything, I was impressed with what I saw and the service I got. I indicated as much to the store manager, and she seemed to be aware that the reputation was poor, and that this season is much better. Nice fabrics, interesting styles, a little sexy, a little sophisticated, much improved from the all-poly nightmares of old. The strange thing I find about plus-size fashion in Vancouver is that it used to be better - I was an Addition-Elle manager in the late 80's and early 90's and there was much more selection (remember Antel's?). It seems the department stores and pricey labels moved in, drove out the specialty stores, then went back to the horrible styles and fabrics of yesteryear. I believe Reitman's now owns both Pennington's and Addition-Elle. My suggestion to everyone is to make very clear comments, in writing, to the head offices of the company, saying what you want and what you would pay for it. They have to hear it from you directly for it to have an impact. And remember, it is much more difficult to provide good fit in the large size market, as there is much more diversity of figure types. Make friends with a tailor, you will be much happier for it.

:DI would like to join in the defence of Pennington's - I visit my aunt in Niagara Falls every year and find the store there very good, much better than plus size stores in Scotland. I always go to Canada with an empty suitcase and go home with a bulging one! The only fault I can find is that they don't seem to stock many blouses/tops with short or three quarter length sleeves which I prefer. The coats and jackets in particular are extremely good buys, especially when the exchange rate for sterling is so good, and ideal for our cold winters in Scotland. Elaine Mitchell, Fife, Scotland.

I used to work for Addition-Elle, and I'll tell you, when Reitman's bought the place out the prices went up the quality went down and the staff were told to treat every customer like a potential shoplifter. They also tried to make all the staff quit so they could rehire at minimum wage. I would love to boycott them, if only there were more options!

Just to let you know, some of the old navy stores in the USA have now started to carry an actual plus size line and they opened one here in CANADA, in of all places, The Tillicum Mall Old Navy in VIctoria. I know that a lot of people hate Wal MArt but I have to mention that their GEORGE plus size line has recently had some very nice dress shirts and suit items like jackets and matching pants and they actually carry petite plus size pants which fit very well. I have to agree that most of the clothing at A&E and Penningtons sucks though. A&E in Metro town did so badly that they changed it to a Penningtons and now they aren't soing so well either. Does it drive anyone else crazy when you go to Reitmans and see a gorgeous shirt/sweater/skirt etc in the skinny girl section yet you never find the same one in the plus side
